There is no room for free thinking in all Arab countries, whether they pretend to be open-minded or not. We tend to ignore the rights of the disabled and we treat Copts like strangers. We discriminate against veiled and non-veiled women. We dismiss our children’s needs and expect them to be no more than obedient toys. We intimidate foreigners and chastise them as imperialist conspirators if they utter a word.
How can we work for the rule of law in Arab countries whose laws blatantly disrespect human rights, justice and equality? It does not make sense in our region. Laws do not respect the individual. Legislation condones murder, oppresses women, represses freedom of expression, bans demonstrations and differentiates between citizens on the ballot boxes. If we call for the rule of law, then obviously we are violating basic human rights.
Arab despotic regimes thought their censorship of our civilization will make us oblivious to our achievements in the past and clueless of our ambitions in the future.
They were wrong. At present, Arab peoples are leading freedom movements that made the world look with interest and may be with envy at our spirit’s yearning for freedom, at our will to defy strong and despotic regimes.
